What is dental cleaning?

Dental or teeth cleaning is the process of removing the plaque and tartar that formed in your teeth, done by a professional.  Its purpose is to protect your teeth from cavities and other gum problems. According to studies, a dental cleaning can significantly improve your oral health, especially when it happens at least twice a year.

The importance of having your teeth cleaned

  1. It prevents tooth loss.

When not removed, plaque build-up on teeth can lead to gum disease, one of the causes of tooth loss. The good news is, with routine teeth cleaning, you are less likely to lose teeth to damage.

  1. It helps brighten your smile.

Do you need help lightening your teeth? Then, dental cleaning is perfect for you. The consumption of coffee or tea can stain your teeth. A regular dental cleaning removes all the stains, leaving your teeth brighter.

  1. It helps freshen your breath.

You sometimes leave food debris behind your teeth, causing you bad breath. To keep your mouth clean and fresh all the time, your dentist cleans the nook and crannies in your mouth.

No matter how carefully and regularly you brush your teeth, you will always need the help of your dentist. Aside from teeth cleaning, your dentist also checks your dental health or if you have tooth decay symptoms or gingivitis.

How do teeth cleaning work?

Even though cleaning procedures vary, most dentists or dental hygienists follow the same routine.

  • They begin by examining your gums using a mirror to check if you have symptoms of oral problems. This allows your dentist to know the current state of your oral health.
  • Once done with the examination, your dentist now proceeds to scaling. Depending on how much tartar has built up on your teeth, your dentist uses either a manual or ultrasonic tool to remove it effectively.
  • Afterwards, your dentist removes lighter stains on your teeth and polishes them with special toothpaste. You may feel a grinding motion during this part, but this is normal.
  • Once completed, they will floss your teeth to remove any remaining plaque.
  • The last step is the application of fluoride. Fluoride treatment is optional, but it helps in preventing cavities. It is either through mouthwash, foam, varnish or gel that your dentist applies for your teeth to absorb.

Is the process painful?

Dental cleanings are not painful; however, discomfort may arise if you already have problems in your mouth, like a cavity or periodontal disease. This is why dentists do assessments before performing the procedure to see dental issues. In rare cases that you feel discomfort after the procedure, your dentist can prescribe you pain medication.

If you want to maintain a beautiful smile and good oral health and avoid costly dental treatments in the future, it is essential to schedule a regular dental cleaning with your dentist. Your North York dentist can help you take on life without worrying about bad breath or other oral health issues.
